A Message From Ben Henderson
President and Executive Director
Queen Lili‘uokalani Children’s Center

Aloha and welcome to the Queen Lili‘uokalani Children’s Center website. We have developed this website to provide information about our beloved Queen Lili‘uokalani and the legacy she established through her Deed of Trust in 1911 to support and serve orphan and destitute children, with preference given to those of Hawaiian ancestry.

The Queen Lili‘uokalani Children’s Center is a social service agency created to carry out our Queen’s mission. The Center’s motto, “Healthy Children, Strong Families, Caring Communities,” reflects our vision for orphan and destitute Hawaiian children. Together with our partners, we work to develop healthy children whose needs are met by a consistent, nurturing caregiver so these children can reach their full potential; strong positive family attachments built on a cultural and spiritual base; a stable home environment; and caring communities that are concerned about the welfare of our children.

The Children’s Center provides assistance in three ways: 1) Individual and Family Support, 2) Group Services, and 3) Community Building Services.

Individual and Family Support assist children who have suffered a significant loss or whose family may be challenged in maintaining a consistently caring and nurturing environment. Examples of this service include grief counseling to cope with the death of a parent; casework to assure that basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter are met; and support to family caregivers who are providing a home for children unable to live with their parents.

Group Services offers help to children and those influential in their lives such as parents and grandparents to support and educate them in areas of interest or concern. Groups are formed around a variety of topics that benefit children, including: parenting grief/loss issues, support to grandparents raising grandchildren, leadership development, and Hawaiian cultural values and practices.

Community Building Services use a long-term approach that focuses on supporting the social capacity of people residing within a geographic area. We help residents strengthen the systems of care available to orphan and destitute children in their neighborhoods by fostering relationships with other resources and partners in the community.

I invite you to learn more about Queen Lili‘uokalani and the work of the Children’s Center. We also encourage you to contact us if you need assistance or would like to know more about our services.

Mahalo for visiting our website.
